What is hypnosis?

Hypnosis is:

  • a state of deep mental and physical relaxation;
  • an altered mind state, much the same as daydreaming;
  • a place where we can connect with the subconscious mind to allow our thoughts, feelings and behaviours to be understood and changed.

What does being under hypnosis feel like?

It feels extremely relaxing and comfortable, so much so that many clients are disappointed when the session is over. It’s a lovely feeling to ‘switch off’ from the outside world and concentrate on your own issues in this very safe space. All sessions end with positive suggestion and motivation so when you leave the session you feel at ease and refreshed.

Is it safe?

Hypnosis is totally safe because firstly, it’s a natural state, and because secondly, I am qualified and experienced to conduct the session. In hypnosis you are relaxed but you are not asleep (a common myth) so you can talk, cough, move, and be fully aware of everything that is happening. When your session is finished you remember everything that has happened and feel positive and recharged.

Is it anything like stage hypnosis?

No, definitely not. Stage hypnosis is done solely for entertainment purposes and the governing body I work under (NCH) does not allow members to engage in this type of practice because of reservations about its uses. Clinical hypnosis concentrates on the therapeutic use of hypnosis only.

What is NLP?

Neuro-linguistic programming is a relatively recent discipline, originating in the 1970s from two American academics, Grinder and Bandler. It combines communication and subjective experience to give pragmatic models that can help individuals work towards their goals. It is seen as having real-life applications rather than a very theoretical base.

How does it combine with hypnotherapy?

Although NLP can be used on its own for great effect, at times therapists combine it with hypnotherapy to create powerful techniques for change.
